Canon Europe has introduced a replacement for the EOS 450D. The new Canon EOS 500D SLR incorporates some of the best technologies from the EOS 50D and EOS 5D Mark II models into an entry-level juggernaut.
The sensor jumps to 15MP sensor much like the sensor in the EOS 50D. You also get the 920,000 dot LCD that has been slowly working its way through Canon’s dSLR product line. The Canon EOS 500D is the first entry-level dSLR to feature video (and 1080p HD video at that).
Features
- 15.1MP, 22.3 x 14.9 mm CMOS sensor
- Digic 4 Processor
- 1080p HD Video
- ISO expandable to 12800
- 920,000 dot 3-inch LCD
- Auto lighting optimiser – now adjustable
- Quick control setting mode
- Peripheral Illumination Correction
- Face detection in Liveview
- EOS Integrated Cleaning System
- Storage: SD/SDHC card
- Plastic Body (Stainless Steel Chassis)
- Lithium-Ion LP-E5 Rechargeable Battery
- Compatible Battery Grip: BG-E5
Another feature brought over from the EOS 50D is “Peripheral Illumination Correction” which brightens the corners of images to correct for lens vignetting.
What’s up with name?
Canon Digital Rebel T1i (USA)
Canon EOS Kiss X3 (Japan)
Canon EOS 500D (everywhere else)
The USA name has lost the letter ‘X’. However, not so in Japan, where it will be known as the ‘Kiss X3 Digital”.
Price and Availability
The new Canon EOS 500D (body only) will be available in Europe from early May 2009 at £870 / €1,000. In the USA, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i (body-only) will have an estimated retail price of US$800.
