Can I Take Pictures Underwater If I Use A Waterproof Casing On My Camera?

by Siew Ing on August 4, 2009

A good waterproof housing will cost about 8 or 9 times the cost of the camera.

Depends on the casing, you can get cases that are splashproof, or cases that are ok for a few metres, or cases that are ok for a few hundred metres. Read what depth your case allows your camera to go down to.
But most cases unless you want to be spending alot of money will be for swimming pool kind of depths eg 2-3metres. Also make sure the case is suited to your camera, and double check its on correctly before you take it in the water.
Also on a side note, if you want to take it into places like public swimming pools, you may not be allowed to or you may need written permission.

Of course you can! You might add what kind of camera, if you check back!
I got an Ikelite housing for my Canon SD630 a few years ago, and yes, it cost about what the camera did. But it’s bombproof! Good to a 160 feet, or about 140 feet more than me! *wink*
Canon, makes underwater casings for many of their models, for around $200.
There are glorified plastic bags for cameras also that only cost about $50.
I included a link to a variety of cases, just to give you an idea what’s out there.
If you care to tell us what camera you want a housing for, I’ll be happy to give you other suggestions.

There are digital cameras, good to 3 meters, I have used the Olympus muji 850. This is designed to take pictures under water.
